Progressive Gardening
Trade Association

The Progressive Gardening Trade Association (PGTA) is the forum that brings together progressive gardening ideas, techniques, people and products and promotes them to the gardening community.

Focused on the implementation of progressive gardening techniques into the mainstream gardening community via trade representation and education, the PGTA is a non-profit trade association for retailers, distributors, manufacturers, and associated businesses promoting environmentally friendly gardening products with a special interest placed on water-wise and organic applications for the home gardening market.

Founded in 1997, the Progressive Gardening Trade Association (PGTA) represents scores of specialty garden retailers, distributors, and manufacturers, together whose mission is to promote earth-friendly organic and water-wise gardening products and techniques for the home gardener.

Many of these businesses were founded and are operated today by formerly frustrated gardeners seeking eco-friendly alternatives to the selection of mass-market products available at big box hardware stores, discount chains, and local nurseries.

This frustration was born at least partially by garden writers themselves. By publishing information supportive of earth-friendly garden practices, garden writers have helped to create and accelerate consumer interest in, and demand for, earth-friendly and water conserving gardening products.

Yet, for consumers, finding products such as drip irrigation kits and components, earthworm castings, compost teas, guanos and aother specialty fertilizers, natural pest controls including beneficial insects, hobby greenhouses, plant propagation products, and others, can be an overwhelming challenge.

All of these items have been promoted extensively as beneficial to the home gardener in books, magazines, and newsletters, as well as on radio and television, yet sourcing them locally can be virtually impossible. Frustrated consumers will all too often fall back on less environmentally friendly alternatives, essentially negating the positive influence initially garnered.

Fortunately, consumers can now find all of these earth-friendly organic, water-wise, and hard-to-find gardening products, plus many more, at the many conveniently located retail member stores of the Progressive Gardening Trade Association. For those who prefer to shop in the virtual world, most of our members maintain comprehensive websites for online ordering and delivery.

It’s not just about the products, however. PGTA member retailers are passionate about what they do, and ensuring their customers success, while providing current information to them regarding the latest developments in horticultural knowledge. This level of commitment just won’t be found in the garden departments of most big box entities. Many of our retail member stores maintain living demonstration gardens year round to illustrate and educate their customers and the public about the endless gardening opportunities available to modern gardeners.

In addition, most of our retail member stores are more than happy to provide a speaker for garden clubs, school classes, civic groups, and any other organization that wants to learn more about being an earth-friendly organic and water-wise progressive gardener.
